Labradorite is a calcium-rich member of the plagioclase feldspars characterised by its schiller effect - a rich play of iridescent colours, mainly blue, on cleavage surfaces. Its body colour can be pale yellow, greenish-grey, or blue, but the iridescence is usually some combination of blue, yellow, and orange hues. Named after the location where it was first found, Labrador in Canada, Labradorite typically forms as twin crystals and is also found in pegmatites and metamorphic rocks. It has a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale and a specific gravity of between 2.68 and 2.72. Labradorite typically exhibits a soft sheen or lustre.
