Red Jasper is a microcrystalline variety of Quartz with a brick-red colour, hexagonal crystal system and Mohs hardness of 6.5 – 7. Red Jasper is a stone steeped in folklore and spirituality – its name comes from the Greek word ‘iaspi’, meaning spotted stone, hinting at its captivating red flecks held within a Quartz mineral base. In Norse legend, Red Jasper was used to forging Siegfried’s magical sword of dragon-slaying fame, ‘Balmung’. Ancient Egyptians used the stone in Isis amulets gifted to their dead. Native Americans believed it could help conjure rain during ritual ceremonies: earning them an apt title as ‘Rainbringer’.
